Growing up can feel like stepping onto a roller coaster you didn’t exactly sign up for. One moment things feel familiar and safe, and the next you’re faced with changes that feel overwhelming or even scary. For many of us, especially as neurodiverse teens, the unknown can feel extra intense.
The truth is, a lot of the time we’re protected from uncertainty when we’re younger. Parents, teachers, and family often try to keep us safe from chaos, risk, and change. While this comes from love, it can mean that when big changes finally do happen, we don’t always feel ready for them.
And that’s okay.
Why Change Can Feel So Hard
For some of us, change can shake everything. It might feel like the ground underneath isn’t steady anymore. You might feel lost, unsafe, or like you’re suddenly without a map. If you’re neurodiverse, these feelings can be even stronger because your brain might process change differently. That doesn’t mean you’re weak—it just means you need tools and support that actually fit you.
Building Resilience (With Support!)
Resilience doesn’t mean pushing through everything on your own. It means learning how to face change with the right strategies and people beside you. Think of it like this: life might throw unexpected twists at you, but you can learn how to steady yourself.
Here are a few ways to start:
✨ Find a trusted person – Whether it’s a parent, mentor, or friend, having someone you can lean on makes a huge difference.
✨ Create safe spaces – This could be a physical place you go to calm down, or even a playlist, fidget tool, or routine that grounds you.
✨ Talk it out – Change feels less scary when you can name your emotions and share them with someone who understands.
✨ Remember it’s okay to feel overwhelmed – You don’t have to “fix” your feelings right away. Sitting with them is part of the process.
You’re Not Alone
Change will always be part of life. But that doesn’t mean it has to control you. With support, self-awareness, and strategies that work for your brain, you can handle the ups and downs that come your way.
Together, we can make it normal to talk about uncertainty and resilience. You deserve to feel safe, supported, and empowered—not just to survive change, but to grow through it.
🌿 Your journey matters. You don’t have to face it alone.
